Schema
Navigating through actual and virtual space
Friday, May 4th 2001 8pm-12am
ONI Gallery, 684 Washington St.
China Town, Boston
all ages $5 donation

Through music, video, film, and other environmental manipulations, Schema will explore the origins of cybernetics. The artists involved will create an environment to navigate through as they navigate their equipment. A mixture of tools old and new will be used to create the environment. Computers, video and film projection, samplers, synthesizers, slides, MIDI, video and audio mixers, turntables, effect processors, guitars, and more will all be part of the mix. The public will be invited to explore and learn about the environment through a series of schematics and maps.

Dirt
\We come from where the collection of consciousness resides in the elements, in its invokers. We are continuously pushing ourselves forward, searching always for new ways to create and express. And yet we are always going back to our roots, to our instinctual impulses. We sometimes forget to think about what has brought us here. We rely on the resources our earth has provided and we must remember to treat that with the utmost respect and not waste our energies creating for the false reality that has been built up around us. This is another way to look at the "grassroots" movement. We, meaning you, don't need to rely on the institutions infiltration into our everyday life to produce something of worth, of value to the self, in order to communicate. So let's make beautiful music out of these resources and unite on the dance floor.

Stillings Street has been a part of the
artist community in Boston for 25 years.
At the end of this month all of the artists there
are being evicted from the building in order
to build a parking garage. The building may be dying,
but the artists there want to show that they continue to thrive.

This weekend, and for the rest of the month,
the doors will be open to all in order to
give this space the great energy it deserves.

Visual arts include paintings, ceramics,
sculpture, and installation.

Performances during the opening will include
poetry readings, live music, DJs, performance art,
video and live installations, and more.

The opening will begin at 4 PM, Sat. March 11
and will continue to move through the building during the evening.

We will hold a procession with a candlelight vigil and ceremony @ 9 PM.
We request guests to bring a candle and their own refreshments.

The building will continue to be open for viewing until March 25.
Gallery hours will be Thursdays and Fridays 5-8 PM,
Saturdays and Sundays 12-5 PM.

For more information contact:
Sand T at (617)350-8769 fax or phone

DuoTone (DJ Flack and DJ C from the Boston art and electronic music collective Toneburst) will perform a live soundtrack to experimental silent films at the Harvard Film Archive Saturday. They'll be doing their signature mixing and scratching of snippets of sound effects and melodies to hip-hop and jungle rhythms to such 1920s Dada classics as Georges Melies 's ''Conquest of the North Pole.'' [sic] After the screening, there will be a reception, featuring music by DJ Ripley and ESP as well as film loops by Sabrina Zanella-Foresi.
